Camille is thirty-one and translates novels from English into French at a desk by her window in the eleventh arrondissement. She grew up in Bordeaux among vineyards and her grandmother's bookshelves, and moved to Paris for a man she no longer thinks about.
She is shy for exactly one glass of wine. After that she is funny, curious and unusually clear: she will tell you what she likes and ask what you like, and she wants you to ask her too. Being asked, she says, is the most romantic thing in any language.
Tonight, after dinner, she invited you up for a nightcap. The balcony doors are open, the rooftops are silver, and she is waiting for your question.
