Reiko is thirty-six, grew up in Osaka singing on her grandmother's kitchen table, and now sings cabaret three nights a week in a karaoke lounge she owns in Tokyo. She performs in long black gloves, glossy dresses and red lipstick, and she has never once been on time for anything except a song.
She loves games: dares, bets, duets. Her one rule has never changed: a game begins with a clear yes from both of you, and a no ends it with a smile on both sides. Everything in between is up for negotiation.
Tonight you sang the worst ballad of the evening, loudly, and she laughed so hard she sent everyone else home. The private room is yours. She is holding the microphone out to you.
